Explanatory Note


The figures published in this booklet have been taken from District Census Reports of the Population Census conducted in March, 1998. Population Census Organization had earlier released provisional figures which have been published in number of Bureau's publications like Sindh at a Glance, Population Statistics of Sindh and Development Statistics of Sindh, etc. Population figures printed in this booklet may, not exactly tally with the figure published in Bureaus earlier publications. However, figures published in this booklet are final and no further changes are expected. Figures have been rounded to nearest thousand. Totals may, not add up by adding the components.

2. In Karachi Division, sectoral information on many sectors at district level are not available. Therefore, it could not be published at district level. In such cases Divisional total have been published.

Definition of important terms used in this publication are as follows.

DENSITY: Pressure of population on land and is calculated by dividing number of people in a district by geographical area of the district.

LAND USE
Definition of important terms used in the Land Use are given below:

i) Total Area Reported means the total physical area of district. It includes cultivated area (net area sown + current fallow) culturable waste, unculturable land and forest area).

ii) Forest Area means the area of any land or classed or administered as Forest under any legal encashment dealing with forests. Any cultivated area which may exist within such forest is excluded and shown under the heading cultivated area.
iii) Total cropped area means the sum total of area sown during given year including Zaid Kharif and Zaid Rabi.


iv) Cultivated Area means the land currently being used for agriculture purposes, included land under crops, Orchard as well as current fallows. It is the area net sown plus current fallow.
v) Current Fallow means the part of the cultivated area which has not been used for cropping during the year under reference but for which the total vacant period does not exceed three cropping seasons. The land remaining vacant to more than three successive seasons should be shown under the head " Cultivable Waste".
vi) Net Area Sown means the area which has been sown at least once in a year. It will include area under crops, fruits and vegetables etc.
Per capita Cropped hectare The cropped area of the district is divided by total population of the district.

Per capita Cultivated hectare The cultivated area of the district is divided by total population of the district.

Fertilizer Use As there are different types of fertilizer which have varying potencies. Application of fertilizer is measured in term of Nutrient Tons.(N.Tons) Consumption of fertilizer measured in N.Tons is divided by the cropped area of the district.

Agriculture Production: Per capita agriculture production for major crops like Wheat, Rice, Cotton and Sugarcane has been computed on the basis of actual production by these crops in the district divided by the total population of the district. Per capita production of less than ten K.G. has been treated as negligible or insignificant.

LITERACY RATIO Literacy Ratio is defined as literate population of ten years and above divided by total population of ten years and above expressed in percentage. In Population Census 1998, Literacy is defined as "Ability of a person to read a news paper or write a simple letter in any language".


EDUCATION

Enrolment Participation Rate. Total enrolment (irrespective of age) in Government primary school of the district (class I to V)is divided by population of children in age group 5 - 9 years.

a) Student per school Total student population in the district is divided by number of school in the district.

b) Student per teacher. Total student population in the district is divided by number of teachers in the district.

c) Teacher per school. Total number of teachers in the district is divided by number of schools.


HEALTH

a) Doctors for ten thousand Total number of doctors in the district is divided by total population of the persons. district and multiplies by ten thousands.

b) Nurses per thousand Total number of Nurses in the district is divided by total population of the
persons district and multiplied by ten thousand.

Para-medics per thousand Para-medics consists of LHVS, Radio-Graphers, Health Technicians, Dispensers/
persons Dressers, X-Ray technicians, O.T. Technicians, Laboratory Technicians, X-Ray Assistants, Laboratory Assistants, O.T. Assistants, Midwives and Dais in the district. Total number of paramedics in the district is divided by the total population of the district and multiplied by ten thousands.

Bed in Hospital per Total number of beds in hospitals being run by Government, Departments,
Ten thousand person private and local bodies in the district is divided by total population of the district and multiplied by ten thousand.

TRANSPORT & COMMUNICATION

a) Pacca Road per 100 Sq.Km Total Pacca road length irrespective of width in the district is divided by the of geographical area. total geographical area of the district and multiplied by hundred.

b) Katcha Road per 100 Sq.km Katcha road length irrespective of width in the district is divided by the total of geographical area. geographical area of the district and multiplied by hundred.

Motor Vehicles Total number of motor vehicles (Car, Jeep, Station Wagons) registered in the
per thousand households. district is divided by number of households in the district and multiplied by
thousand.

Motor Cycles per Total number of Motorcycles registered in the district is divided by number of
thousand households. households in the district and multiplied by thousand.

ENTERTAINMENT

T.V. set per thousand Total number of T.V. sets (licence issued) in the district is divided by the number
households. of households in the district and multiplied by thousand.

GROWTH RATE Refers to the population growth rate between Population Census conducted in 1981 and 1998. Compound growth rate has been computed by the formulae.

EDUCATED POPULATION Persons of 10 years and above who have passed at least matriculation examination from a Board or an institution divided by total population of ten years and above expressed in percent.
