Decentralization of administrative and planning machinery, devolution of power and formation of district governments are priority areas of the present government. In meeting the needs of good governance and bringing in district government data at the district level have assumed a great deal of importance. District Development Indicators Sindh contains important statistical data for all twenty one districts in the province. This is the first issue and provides information on administrative setup, population and housing characteristic and data on agriculture, education, health, transport and communication, industries and Poverty Alleviation Program for all the districts in Sindh and for urban and rural areas and by gender where necessary. In order to measure backwardness and compare disparities among district socio-economic indicators for district and division have also been computed. It is hoped that this publication would serve as useful reference material for planners, administrators, policy makers, research scholars and others interested in socio-economic development of the province. I would like to place on record my appreciation for hard work done by officers of the Bureau in bringing out such a useful publication and the Director of the Bureau of Statistics for his painstaking work. Suggestions for improvement in this publication will be gratefully acknowledged and appreciated.
